I am looking into getting some larger species of cichlid for my 55 gallon. I would like to know which one you would all choose. I would like a fish with a personality. I know the Sevrums get large and probably to large for a 55 gallon. I would like to have about 4 of these fish in this tank, just to keep the aggression down in the tank.
From what I have read the Terror is easier to sex at a young age, and that the Dempseys are tough. Any info will help on this subject matter. Thanks

I'm not a keener on New worlds, but I know you probebly wont be able to keep any more than 1 fish in the 55. MAYBE a pair, but I'm not entirely sure. I'm kind of an advocate for fish having as much space as possible, so I dont want to see a fish that gets over 6" being kept in a 55, bottom line.

Putting aside size for a moment, I still dont think you'll be able to "overstock" the tank to keep down aggression. It doens't work with all cichlids.

1 fish, maybe 2.

I don't think you'll get 4 of any of those into a 55 gal long term. Of the list, the Blue Dempsey might work the best but they are also the most expensive and the most fragile. I would just got for 2 and even then, you should have a backup plan in case 1 of them turns out to be particularly nasty :D

I have two 5 inch Blue Dempseys and a 6 inch Steiny in a 55 g aquarium with dithers. I have not had any aggression issues. I do think 4 of the above fish in one tank will not work long term, but you can proabably get two and a smaller (more docile) eartheater in a 55g with no issue.

get a Midas

Joey,
If you want personality and size, get a Midas Cichlid. They are like your dog in water. Mine like to be pet and play games, seriously, I'm not joking.
Check out some pics of mine and others on the post titled 15 inch Midas with video.
HOpe this helps...

I would try two GTs and a Jack (I dont have a jack cause they're Illegal :(), I have 5 GTs in my 55g but they getting too big so the are going in a 100g @ my brothers until I get my new tank.
