You could not do many slow larger peaceful fish due to the barbs. They are nippers. They would either nip, or the fish would be agro and would eat them. Without the barbs you could do some angels or sevrums. They get biggish. A chocolate cichlid would be another one that would do well without the barbs....
you can get a prochilodus, although they are not so common. they are the fish in my avatar. i have had them with oscars and other aggressive fish to neons.
A fairly peaceful cichlid that is OK with fish in the 2 to 3 inch range is the rainbow cichlid, herotilapia multispinosa. It will go through vegetative growth if given the chance. My 6 juveniles removed all of the duckweed from an out of control 29 in 2 days flat. They have teeth that are well made for eating the thread-like algae that sometimes develops on plants. They do feed hungrily so go through a lot of food. Best kept with a diet higher in vegetables than most cichlids.
they get to 10-12 inches. they are not very common but also not extremely rare. a 4 inch specimen goes for 25-40 dollars depending on stock. they are extremely aggressive towards their own kind but leave everything else alone. they can be skittish and ram the glass or jump out when frightened. i have taught mine just recently to eat from my hand. a big accomplishment for these guys. he wont eat my shrimp or even the smallest fish. i have him on flake/pellet food. jurupari and other cichlids are peacefulm for a cochlid. they will eat what fits in their mouth though.
Not sure of Jaysen's source on size but the herotilapia multispinosa only get to 4 or 5 inches depending on which source you believe. From what I have seen, the 5 inches is more likely. In a community tank it would be best to have only 1 or 2. We are not setting up a large breeding tank, its just a display tank. They are nervous but seem to do OK with lots of cover available and other fish to remind them its OK to come out. I'm sure all kinds of starnge behaviors are possible but I have not seen them in this fish. I am guessing that jaysen has this fish mixed up with one that actually does get huge.
