Large Gravel (pebbles)....

Thanks for the input RTR. I thought the larger ones were a bit big too, that's why I started this thread. However when I actually took the tape to the tank and looked at the stones I realized most of them are not actually that big. They are some bigger ones but I think the majority are an ok size.

I was planning on getting some dwarf hairgrass for my other tank with profile/flourite mix. In this tank I think I'm going to grow a thick carpet of dwarf sag. I'm not really too worried about aquascaping, I just want dense plant growth. That's why I'm upgrading the lighting as well.

Just my .02 dollars...

i have the same substrate as you, i think. a friend gave me some anachris, and i fell in love with plants. I felt too limited by the gravel, so today I went out and got a very fine blend, took all of the decor out, and lowered the water level to 20 percent... and added the new small grain. it looks awesome! if you mix the small with the large, and have a layer of small ontop, some areas will erode a bit, exposing the larger grain, and it looks great!! my loaches also seem happier, perhaps my plants will root now!

It wasn't too hard, i'd definitly recommend doing it...

best,
evan

Fish-only tanks should be vacuumed full-depth routinely and regularly. Planted tanks are not substrate vacuumed as that disrupts rooted plants. When clumps of plants are uprooted for division and replanting (average 1-3 years), then some substrate vacuuming is in in order. but otherwise you just skim above the surface to get obvious dead leaves, etc., without didturbing the substrate.
