I think my 45G may need a single larger fish in it to help its appearances. A single gourami is an option, although I already have a pearl in my other tank so I'm leaning towards getting something I don't already have. Before I go into what I'm thinking of, my current stock is 6 zebra loaches, 2 madagascar rainbowfish, 6 praecox rainbowfish, and an adult female sword (I plan on adding two more once her fry are born and grow out enough to not be harassed.) The tank measures 3'Lx1'Dx2'H. I'm pretty full so I'm only looking at a single fish.

An angelfish seems like a natural choice with this tall of a tank. As long as the swordtails play nice, I can't imagine there being much of a problem with one of these. I also thought about a discus, although if they truly are a social fish they aren't an option. I'm not considering them very seriously; I mostly just was hoping people would tell me that they're completely inappropriate so I stop thinking about them at all. I just now thought about bolivian rams, but I already have a pair of GBRs and I'm not sure that bolivian would really add much to the tank. Are there any other takers? I'm pretty sure most of the others would get too nasty, but I like to ask.

A Green or a Gold Severum would work great.

I do not know alot of severums, do they have a good temperment for rainbows? I have been thinking of stocking my new 55 like your 45g.
But my wife really wants some silver dollars.

each specimen has its own personality, but generally severums are pretty easy going, although generally more aggressive than angelfish or Satanoperca. The rainbowfish are fast and will generally avoid the severum.

It looks like sevs will grow to a good 12", which is a bit bigger than I'd like. The tank is only 12" deep, so I don't think there'd even be enough room in the tank for the fish alone, regardless of compatability with smaller fisher. They're pretty, but I don't think they'd fit. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I believe the tank is actually
3' lx1'wx 2' d

IMO a little too small for sev. consider angels or festivum(flag cichlid)
if you go with discus please consider that discus are shoaling fish and should be in a group of atleast 4.

also too small for the tank.
