Laser eye surgery?

What I would like to know is how effective the surgery is in the long run. Everybody's vision gets worse with age, at a certain rate perhaps. So after having surgery, does that person's vision decline at the same rate, or faster, to 'catch-up', or reach a sort of equilibrium to where the vision should be naturally. Or could the surgery be permanent?

Stop and read this as a possible alternative...

I'm not sure I like the idea of adding parts when there are other alternatives. I would imagine that the lens would need replaced occassionally. The page says only 90% didn't need touchups after 7 years. If someone gets the implant at age 30, they could live another 50 years. I'd rather not have my eye chopped open 8 times if I can avoid it. I can see how the procedure would be useful in some cases though.

On a side note,
I have heard that Lasik
has problems with de-tached retinas. After surgery (Lasik), if there's "eye trama" from - let's say a car accident, it's not possible to 're-attach' the retina.

I like the idea of laser surgery on the eye to correct vision - but be prepared, there's one chance to do it right..

Snopes it, if you will....

Actually the retina can be reattached and should be done quickly to allow the greatest chance of recovering lost vision. Luckily detached retinas are very rare anyway and typically occur in those with very bad eyesight to begin with.

The place I went is called the Lasik eye center and that is all they do, the exam to see if I was a candiddate lasted 2 hours  they were very precise. They did a topigraphical map of my eyes with a special camera which showed the exact shape of my corneas etc. Then they measured the thickness of my corneas, they put dye in my eyes, dialated them so big that you couldn't tell what color my eyes were anymore, I mean the iris' was obliterated, lasted 6 hours, then of course looked for floater's and such. The lady who did all the tests said her job was to disqualify me, not qualify me  she said that is one of their fail safes to make sure that people who are not candidates don't get it done. After she was done and I had passed all her tests then and only then did I get to see the doctor, who then ran me through several tests again just to make sure. If you buy the insurance on the proceedure then you get lasik for life free if you ever need a tune up.
As for presbyopia (what happens as everybody's eyes age-hence the need for reading glasses) that is a condition that is not treatable with lasik and having lasik done does not prevent this condition from occuring. For anybody interested here is a link that explains the condition:

Just wondering anybody here have it done or know somebody who has and what did you think about it? I'm kinda nervous I went and had the eval today and they said that I could probably achieve 20/15 in both eyes.
(Currently I'm 20/40 and 20/60-astigmatism in both eyes :()
I have an appointment for the laser on the 29th................So anybody have any info.
you have 20/40 and 20/60 and you want to get this done why?
no offense, but thats kinda pointless in my mind.

I went from 20/900 to 20/40 thanks to lasik. 20/40 is more than adequate

for most people there isn't much pain and I've known people to go back to work within hours of the procedure.
I was outta work for about 5 days following mine with a LOT of burning in my eyes because they burned off a good chunk of my eye. Most people dont have this problem though.

if it was just the 20/40 and 20/60 then I wouldn't get it done, but the astigmatism is the reason I thought about doing it, and I'm tired of glasses been wearing them for 20 years, also my hubby who's eyes are much worse than mine is thinking about having it done as well so I guess you could say I'm the guinnea pig :p

had it done in July. Love it. I have better than 20/20. No problems either. I had the new procedure where they use a laser to make the cornea flap instead of a blade. lasted 30 min from start to finish. They even corrected my stigmatism.

on a side note I'm also tired of how much places charge for the freaking frames my lenses are a little less than a hundred, but the frames are outrageous....when my husband got his glasses it was almost 400 bucks, I haven't gotten new glasses in 2 years so I don't know what it would cost today but 2 years ago it was 300.
