Anyone out there can you talk to me about your opinions on lasers AND laser lighting in general..... I've ordered a Miracle Beam combo Laser and Hi-Lite backlighting system...

There web site raves of the benefits of lasers for raising fry, help reduce bacteria, etc. etc. and FISHZINE magazine did a big product review on it too....

Does anyone else own this? Is it safe or dangerous? What are your results? if/any...

I ordered it specifically so I can use it in the evening and have the main plant light off.... AND IT LOOKS SO DARN COOL......:cool:

Oh please, advertising should be at least somewhat realistic. Come on, improves fin growth? Increases fry growth?
The only possible benefit that i can see of these are to make the tank look cool and spiffy, which you'll get over in about 2 weeks. Downsides would be: fish getting lasered in their eyes, which they cannot close; Unnatural lighting scheme (where in nature does light come from underneath??); and the money you didnt need to spend on underwater lasers.

If you really wanted something spiffy i would suggest the LED's mentioned above. Get blue or red ones and use them as a moonlight/nightlight. The blues are real great at making corals flouresce.
 
I use the Hi-Lites. They're LEDs, not lasers. It came with a blue and green light and right now I've attached them to the glass top on my 90 gallon. The blue one lights up a large piece of driftwood, and the green one shines on my back wall of bubbles. I want to get two or three more. I'll then move three of them mostly under the gravel to light the bubbles from the bottom. I'll keep the blue on top; I really like that look, and it's not as bright as the green.

I like to turn off the tank's fluorescents at night, along with all the lights in the room.
 
All I asked for is to have Sharks... with f***** Laserbeams attached to their head!

Hi Lites...

I have 5 of those regular 'lites', not 'laser'. They looked better when I had them at the top of the aquarium on the underside of the center brace. At this time they are on the bottom near the front of the tank.
 
my friend has the lasers. personally i thought they were pretty cool, especially the lighthouse. but, as noted, i would wonder about the effect of lasers on fish eyes, or in the case of the lighthouse, anyone in the room and especially in the projected path (it reflects the beam around). they also aren't really very bright, just a dim, gloomy light that really doesn't give you alot to see by. from what i have seen his have just become another thing to screw with. aiming and reaiming and reattaching when the suction cups pop off. he stopped using his shortly after he bought them, $100 out the window..... he still wouldn't sell them to me tho.....
 
All i know these things stress the fish to their deaths,doesn't look natural,really useless,unless the colour is red,all the rest will scare the fish till it poops.
