Laterite

Any experiences with laterite? Does it raise pH? How beneficial is it for plants?

I just completed a planted tank, it is a clay and it shouldn't affect PH. I used a clay mix (not sure if it is laterite) in my soil mix for my aquarium and I am able to keep the PH below 6.0. I think there is a test you can do also, just pour some of the substance into water, if the substance is going to raise the PH the water will fizz.

Heard it is good for iron loving plants. I use to use it for swords. I have not used it in years and do not notice any difference.
