where can i find this, the lady at the rock place told me that lava rock is to light and will float, is there anything that looks dark red like lava rock out there.

I just bought 2 new 75G tanks and want one with red lava and the other with a black rock

go down to your local homedepot or where ever you can buy barbeque supplies and you can get bags of lava rock....oh and it doesnt float. You can get bigger chunks at the LFS and probably in landscaping departments if you look around.

just make sure you wash it ALOT. it is very dusty when you buy the barbeque stuff.

If it floats, it's Tuffa Rock....also known as Feather Rock around here! It is extremely porous and light, but a bit sharp as well! Lava Rock should sink with little problems, just roll it around to make sure you get all the air bubbles out of it.

i got moon rock it looks like this
i think this might be what you looking for
it does float all you have to do is boil it and
it will sink

i got a 50lb. bag of red lava rock at menard's in the landscaping section. it was less than $3. anyway, most of the chunks are about one inch- 2 inches across. if you want them smaller, i would think they wouldn't be too hard to break up with a mallet. probably alot of work though. i have caves that i built out of it and siliconed together. it raises my gh/kh. my tap has gh of 15d and kh of13d. my tank water is gh 20d and kh 17d, average. my ph is 7.5 from tap, and 8.0 in tank. this rock does not float, and is very attractive, but do make sure you rinse it alot. hope this helps.:)

oh yeah, its much cheaper to buy it in the landscaping section than the stuff for bbqs. but 50lb. was the smallest bag i could find. i believe they also have gold lava rock. anyway, i think the boxes they sell for bbqs are about 7 lbs. and they cost 10-12 dollars at wal-mart.
