Lava Rock?

My LFS has started to stock lava rock in the past couple of weeks. I've been interested in the benefits of lava rock, both biological and physical, ever since i set up my 20 Gal. My question is, would this type of rock be okay with my current stock. I have seen lava rock in cichlid tanks but fro some reason never in a community tank (I'm guessing I'm not looking hard enough). My main concern is if the sharp edges of lava rock would have any negative effects on my fish.

My main concern would be the otos- they could cut up their lips while grazing algae off the lava rock.

Hypertufa is a possible alternative.

That makes sense, i did a little research on that hypertufa stuff and found some information that said it can send your ph levels through the roof.
