you can, but lava rock is very porous and will hold onto any chemicals. it may take a little bit.

wash the rock off. observe anyhting funny from the rock and then place in tank. iu have bought many pieces of lava rock over the years and done that procedure. no worries; no problems.

i would boil if you can and then soak for a whole day and you should be good

I usually just soak mine and then spray it off with the hose and have had no problems yet but that is only my .02 worth

well i boiled a bit pot of hot water and poured it in my sink with my 4 lava rocks to saod after i washed it off for a good ten minutes and let it soak in boiling hot water and now everything is fine..no problems the rocks been in my tank about a week now..

what ever you do, don't buy lava rock at the pet store. Go to a rock place and get all the lava rock you could want for under 10 bucks!
