I was given two canister filters: Fluval 303 and a 403. The 303 has a crack on the bottom and I'm going to replace it with a different filter (I think). The 403 leaks like a sieve...I'm thinking it's just the O-ring. However, they are both used...(came with the tank). Should I just get one new filter Rena XP 3 or go with two smaller filters? I'm new to the canister filter game.

The tank is about 125 gal (72"x18"x22") and I'm going to be running freshwater fishies. Probably some smaller fish, not Pecos and the like. My wife likes the small colorful ones.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks.

I'd try to get the filters you have fixed. If the one only needs an O-ring then why waste money on a new filter?

...because it's a used filter... I don't know what kind of nastyness is in it. I cleaned it out and rinsed the media out of it...but still...

I hear ya. take a look at this.

This filter cleaned up as good as new... almost. After I got all the gunk off and rinsed everything I filled a tank that also needed sanitizing and ran the filter on the tank with a chlorine dilution for a week. Lemme tell you it ended up cleaner than I expected. I just hate to waste money on this hobby if I don't have to. To each his/her own.

Picked up a Rena EP3 last night from PetSmart for about $80. Price matched them with their own website, then used a 10% off coupon code, then $15 off coupon. I'll use one of these until I get the 403 cleaned out and fixed.

Thanks for the help guys.

The only problem is that they are filthy dirty and may need to be replaced anyways... so I went with a new one for right now until I can do a thorogh job of cleaning and fixing the other two/one.

Yes, the O-Ring is easy to replace. On a scale of 1 - 10 (10 being hardest), it rates a 1.
