Leaks: My Great Fear

Also be careful when you are doing things like water changes or rearranging the decor because that's when you are likely to get water on the carpet. I have carpet too, and have figured out a pretty good setup using a plastic tablecloth and have lots of towels available just in case.

Today I removed my co2 line tubing because i wanted to keep the little check valve for future use. Well, I got the tubing off, and took away the check valve. I went back into the living room and heard trickling. I should have suspected, but Isaw the filter running well and figured it was a quirk.

Later, I was about to go out when I made another stop in the living room, I noticed 4 inches of water lost from the tank, and a pool forming under it. Well, I panicked and started feeling under the aquarium for a crack. What a rush of adrenalin.... Then I saw the co2 line hanging at the back, slowly siphoning the water out. What a rush of relief, but I still had about 10 or more gallons of water to clean up. It took 2 sheets a towel and a mop!
Lesson learned!

Doh! Mistakes we make.

Get a new tank, a stand made for it, add styrofoam under it, and level the tank as you fill it.

But, the biggest source of water is you! First, get a huge towel and keep it under the stand. Spread it in front of the tank each time you mess with the tank. Add a smaller size towel that you keep over your shoulder for wet hands.

Train yourself to hold that towel in your hand when you have water running into the tank if you use a Python or hose to refill -- if you don't put the towel down you can't pick up something else to get distracted and overfill the tank.

Be aware of if and how your filter might overflow, some HOB can overflow and spill if too dirty, canisters can have hose knocked off if not connected well. Always have a lid on the tank, dead fish on the floor will smell after awhile.

It is very rare for a tank to crack or leak.
