I had a bad weekend concerning my tanks.

I did water changes on both of my tanks that are cycling. I also worked on the stocked tank that I have. Somewhere in there I made a mistake that has cost me almost all of my fish. Judging by the speed and manner in which they went belly up, I believe that it was shock from a change in temperature.

Of the 16 fish that were in my hex tank, only 3 survived. One tiger barb, and 2 yo-yo loaches, but even the two loaches still seem less than relaxed.

Lesson learned. I won't be doing that again...

shock from a change in temperature? What temperature was the water you put in?? To cold to hot?? I've done the too hot and I had some very large cichlids jumping out......I had to throw every piece of ice I had into the tank. Sorry about your loss.

There must be something in the water... I had a bad weekend with my fish too :sad

LOL. Something in the water...is that a pun? :p

Too warm I think, N8. I have two other tanks that I have been keeping at a higher temp than this one. My mistake was changing them all at the same time. When I set my water temp to refill with a python, I probably had the other two tanks in mind and adjusted accordingly. I did not turn that temp down when I filled the 3rd tank. It wasn't hot, but it had to have been enough of a temp higher as to cause a drastic change.

That's the ONLY thing I can think of that would have caused the reaction that it did. A good number of them were belly up within 45 min. The rest kicked off one by one throughout the rest of the day, but they were all visibly stressed. No sign of disease or injury in the tank, and water tests within normal limits.

The one barb that survived has settled back in, but now it's alone. The two loaches are still flapping their gills, but their color has returned and I think they will be fine.

Well, Copper, I used my new Python-clone this weekend and nearly did the same thing. For some reason, it started pulling hot water only when I had set the temp before I even started. Luckily, I happened to walk back to the sink end to check things out. The water sounded different, as it does when hot water is running instead of cold. Sure enough, about 2-3 feet of the hose at the faucet end had hot water in it. I let the hot water drain from the hose, reset the temp and the same thing happened. Finally, the 3rd time was a charm. Scared the heck outta me.
