Learning About My New Tank/fish

Another little tip on fish buying...

Aways have a look around for a quarantine tank(s) or look for tanks that say quaranteed or NFS(not for sale) IF you cant see any ask someone where they are/if they have them.

IF a shop is clever enough to be able to qauranteen sick/injured fish then that may be an indication of there standards and the quality/health of there fish.

Yeah I think I will take that back after a trip to one of my LFS's today to pick up a "friend" for my Blood Parrot, in order to reduce her aggression and keep her company

Was told over the phone that they had 2 large pure bred adult blood parrots in stock plus a load of babies. Got there to find to "bubblegum bred" DYED/PAINTED and very sick looking fish. When I questioned the bloke there about if they were dyed and there breeding he told me no one dies or paints fish these days its all down with breeding. Liar

And to add insult to injury they had the parrots on a tank with barbs (fin nippers and flashy flowing fins dont mix)

I wasnt to impressed the last time I went there and needless to say I probally wont be going there again.

Sorry for the rant ;)

For anyone who is interested... After doing alot of research on parrot fish I discovered that allmost all males are sterlile due to there hybrid type breeding, so the tactic of alot of breeders is to breed a female BP with a male Convict cichlid, this produces allmost identcial fish apart from differences in the mouth mainly but also a few other internal differences. Appartently the current lingo for these kind of Parrots is "bubblegums" or "jellybeans". Havtn got a clue why
