leaving for 5 days

Better yet, you should hide the fish food so no one will "think the fish are hungry" and add a handful of food. I've almost had that happen.

I went to NY for 10 days and left 5 cherry barbs and a couple otos alone and they turned out ok. I'm pretty sure fish are used to that kind of thing. They find food everywhere even when your not looking.

I'm leaving town for 5 days too.

Do I need to anything with the light? The tank can get some natural daylight, its on the wall opposite the windows. IF I leave the shades partially open, will the daylight be enough for the fish?

Or do I need to get a timer?

If you've got live plants you should have a timer for the lights. Fish don't need the light.

If there is any chance construction debris/dust can get in the tank, you might want to consider covering it with a bedsheet (as long as the light isn't used). Also that there is no chance the workers might trip the breaker for that tank. Other than that, they should be fine without food for a few days AND they will be sooo glad to see you when you get back.

5 days is no big deal, and even 2 weeks isn't bad, 3 weeks is pushing it though

the fish are in my bedroom and the door will be closed the whole time. landlord is aware that no one is to go in there or i will hurt someone. there also won't be a lot of debris and dust outside of what they did today so no worries there

I left for 5 days last month all I did was 2 days before leaving I did water change. Fed as usual before I left. All was fine when I returned.
Dont have anyone else come in and feed as someone will overfeed your fish and that could be a worse fate then no food at all.
They will be fine and have fun.
