LED auqarium lights

Just an FYI for others, those LED lights SUCK big time for corals. I checked them out at my LFS with my PAR meter and 6" under the light at the surface of the water I was getting under 200 PAR. That is the PAR readings one should try and get at the sand bed, not the surface of the water for a "reef" tank, one with corals in it. For a Fish Only tank, the light is fine, as you can see by the picture of a FW tank with what looks like oversized goldfish in it. LOL. There are a dozen versions of that same light going around. Evolution was the original name/version of this light.

For the price it isn't really a bad deal, but just know it is near impossible to work on those lights if something goes wrong and I have read at many reputable places (reefbuilders, reefcentral, nanoreef, etc) that most Mfg will not actually honor their warranty. Seen one LFS buy 80 of the Evolution fixtures, had over 40 fail within the first 12 months (under warranty) and he could not get the Mfg in China to replace them.

Here is a video showing the 200w version, one up from the 120w version. Without lenses you can see the low PAR. This video is the first time I have seen a 1w LED fixture with lenses on it and you can see how big of a difference lenses make.

Yea I have heard that they are just "OK" for a fowlr, but not quite the light for a reef.

Those goldies look a lot like parrots...didn't know they needed salt to be SW fishies.....

well anyway you look at it. LED lighting is a waste of money!

That might generally be true, but if you DIY them (with the big Cree emitters or similar, not sure what people are using but they're big 'star' style surface mount LEDs, not the little dinky plastic dome deals like these lights use) you can get some really impressive light out of them. Granted, for less money, with less trouble, you can just get some pendants and the 5 LED in 1 socket style bulb replacements. Probably get the same kind of light out of them too, and replacement would be a ton easier.

Huh? How do you figure? I have LEDs over both my tanks and get more light out of my 48 LED light than 800w of MH if I wanted. I was just saying the fixture at the beginning of this thread was crap, not all LED lights are though.
