LED's for planted tanks (not lunar)

dang that stinks lol sounded good. but over 40.00 in leds alone for less than a 5g tank and im sure it is bigger than 5g. 200.00 leds roughly for a 10g then? and 1.00 each? its prolly cheaper to buy a hood and bulbs everynow and again.

check out some Ahem... hydroponic... sites. They've been into leds for some time now. they also supply mylar sheeting with up to 95% reflectivity. There are 4ft flourecent tube replacements out there that are led but if you compare output in lumens you find led lights come up short. Until demand for these lights gets to where mass production can make them cheap we won't see anything I'll buy anytime soon.

The number of led's is quite variable... what kind of leds are we talking about? 5W Cree leds (there going to be more than $1)? .01W cheapie leds than are 5 cents? Also things like the viewing angle will come into play, some leds focus the light into a tight 10 degree angle or less, some 45... it would be far easier (but probably more $) for a DIYer to use some of the pre done led clusters like the PAR30, PAR35, whatever they are called... for example see http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=par+led&category0=

wow that light bar is pretty cool. Lumens may not be the best benchmark for comparison although it is one of the more common stats posted with different lights. If I'm not mistaken, lumens take the human eye's sensitivity into account.

I think I want to try this. Don't know when I'll have time to do it but I want to at least plan something out to see what the prices would be like.

well I did a little more googling and decided that I would bite the bullet and give this a try. I purchased the following from superbrightleds.com

10 white 18000mcd
20 blue 4600mcd 472nm
6 green 8000mcd 535nm
25 red 8000mcd 630nm
5 yellow 10000mcd 588nm
10 red 1200mcd 625nm

total was just over 50 bucks after shipping. I'll either dig up an old power supply around here or buy one from radio shack. The big question is... NOW WHAT?

That is a really good link, nice and simple. I have done moon lights and a few other electronics projects but this is going to be on another scale. I want to have each color on their own dimmer so I can screw with them... I'll keep you posted on how things go.

Anyone have recommendations on how to test the efficacy?
