I was recently given a little 1.5 gallon tank with a built-in LED fixture on it (with 9 LEDs). What kind of light level would this give me as far as keeping plants is concerned?

I'm not sure if LED lighting is the greatest type of lighting for plants.

All I really want is java moss, especially since it's such a small tank, but I might try some crypts or something as a little background

If you have the Tetra Water Wonders, I believe that light is too weak to grow anything. I can barely see inside with those LEDs...

Here is a thread with how I lit my 1.5G tank to grow plants, if you're interested.

I looked it up and it is the Tetra Water Wonders. I tested the light with another AC adapter I had laying around and noticed they were incredibly weak, but I thought maybe it was just because it wasn't the right voltage. I guess I'll figure out some way to retrofit some different lighting like you did

I would just take the top off and use a desk lamp...an Ottlite bulb or other similar daylight bulb for detail work (such as embroidery) works great. Then you could grow just about anything that would fit, such as Anubias nana or narrow leaf Java fern.

Those LED lights in the Water Wonders tanks won't grow anything - it can probably keep Java moss alive, but it won't grow fast.

And yes, there are LEDs that can grow corals, and plants...but they're expensive as hell, certainly not included in a $20 aquarium kit ;)
