Lets Discuss Cichlid Mating Behavior

ha..... i get it...... anyway ive heard of this happening females laying eggs together, but i think a large indication that cichlids are going to breed is the cleaning and protection of a flower pot or flat surface

well...not mouthbrooders...eg....
 
someone tell me more about tail whipping. . .

okay, edit, that sounds weird by itself.

two of my severums were sitting in a line the other day, one behind the other. the one in front was swishing his/her tail over the face of the one behind it. is that tail whipping? is that. . . anything?

I do not consider lip locking as a sign of aggression.. more a test . the female may use lip locking to determine is the male is up to the task...breeding. they do try to select their mates.. color and strength are 'measures' of some desirable characteristics.
 
Their might be aggression liek lip locking in the fish pair bebcuase the male wotn actually invite the female over until he has finished preparing the spawn site sometimes. He will chase her off until hes ready. My cons dont do much they just dig a hole and do a little dance. Ive seen behaviors like the male whipping his tail in the females face sometimes in other cichlids.
