lets see your backgrounds

I think SoCalDiscus has a discus tank with a white background that is VERY sharp. It does come out to be slightly blue tinted because of the water and glass.

if you wanted to try out painting a background white or some odd color, i would do it on a cheap 10 gal, that way if it turns out to be a compleate bust, you can scrap it off or throw it away, you arnt out much, but i wouldnt do it on a $400 tank. JMO

BTW: just because it is white doesnt mean it will cause more algae to grow, it is just that you will see it much easier and it may look extreamly dirty.

This not my tank, but it will show how effective a white background can be. It looks very dramatic, and can make your scape pop in a manner unlike black.
Browse through the entries in several categories, and you will notice a lot of white backgrounds.

Here's the link to the AGA aquascaping contest.

i didnt see any white backgrounds, but some really cool tanks. and now that i am looking i cant find any white backgrounds on a tank anywhere.

That link does go to a white background. Like I said before, it doesn't look bright white because of the water and glass color.

Here is the tank I was talking about. The first two pics show it with a black background, the second two pics show the same tank and fish with a white background.
