My mother had a 10 with three goldfish in it. The other day she calls me up and asks me to clean it out. Yuck there was so much algae(sp?). But I discovered that she was leaving lights on 24/7 and the lights were not aquarium lights to begin with. So I told her to turn the lights off for 8 hrs a day and get the proper bulbs. And clean weekly.
Since she was having trouble believing what I told her could be correct I decided that it was time for a visit to the LFS. SO the next day we went. During our visit to the fish store the LFS owner told her that not only would er fish tank support 3 goldies but he sold her 2 more! :mad2: He also sold her a pleco and 2 crabs. so that gives her a total of 5 goldfish 1 pleco and 2 crabs. in a 10 gallon tank. I did encourage her to buy 2 real plants.

This is just so discouraging. I am not really looking for advice just wanting to vent to some other people that know how uncomfortable all those fish are together.

If this upsets you this much, why did you let her buy those fish?
It seems that you should have stepped in and helped your mother out. Anyways, I hope your are ready when your mother asks why her fish look sick.

Print up information pages on each kind of fish, ones that list the correct size and care. If you post the website you choose we can help tell you whether or not it is correct.
Once you've printed everything give it to your mom to read, she'll probably realize the pet store is BS.

If they sold her fiddler crabs they're meant for saltwater or brackish and will soon die in her tank, print up info about them too.

All you can do is educate her, if you get angry she probably won't be receptive, at least my parents aren't.

The algae is probably Cyanobacteria which shows up in horrid water conditions, I bet the ammonia and everything is extremely high.
Poor fish :(
I would have completely gone off on those people if I were in that pet store.

Cyanobacteria can show up in even the healthiest aquarium conditions. There really is no correlation there.

But on topic, I would honestly go to that LFS and chew them out. Really. I really would.

i would never go there again and tell everyone in my neighborhood not too. believe me, in a subdivision like mine where everybody has at least 1 tank over 20 gallons, and the person with the biggest tank has a tank that is over 1000 gallons (thats not even counting all of the ponds people have), not getting that much buisness can really harm a store and then force them to reform.

as for your fish, take back atleast the pleco, crab, and the newest goldfish.

We also need to keep in mind that there are people out there that will refuse to learn and don't consider animal cruelty as anything wrong.

Exactly!!! I does not matter what I tell my mom, even at 27 I am a youngster to her. She refuses to listen to anything I tell her.

Oh by the way I am a GIRL:girl: :p: its a confusing username. I picked it cause I registered another username here first and lost the password :(
