So today I went to my local fish store to tell them that one of the glass fish I bought there over a week ago has ich. Now this is a "big box" pet store keep in mind. I led one of the associates to the glass fish tank to show them and the glass fish still in the tank were now covered in spots on there fins. I said your fish obviously have ich! The lady tells me at this point that its not ich at all but its lack of salt. I dont want to take her word for it, but none of my other fish are showing signs at all. She said glass fish and mollys are accually brackish water fish. Im treating for ich now with salt (1 1/2 tsp per gal) and heat (82-84). If its not ich I want to turn down the heat, possibly lower the salt also. The spots are leaving the one glass fish but if it is ich this may be the time to kill it. What the heck should I do folks?

Probably the lady is right. It's ich and at the same time it's lack of salt. Glassfishes are brackish fish, and keeping them in freshwater will make them weak and prone to disease.
Keep the salt/temp treatment for severla weeks. they will be much better in that enviroment

Its proabably ich and the LFS lady was probably trying to say that the reason they have ich is cause there brackish water fish and that without the salt there imunie system doesnt function properly. I would see if they will take the fish back if I where you.

Maybe I just unlucy. I have yet to meet a knowledgable lfs employee in Oralndo. This week I called to see if a store I frequent carried a replacment for my cf. "What's a compact flourescent, it that a smaller bulb?"

glass fish are especially prone to it
the best treatment for ick is salt in the water- it kills the ich organism while it's in it's free swimming stage (the only time you can kill it)
although your other fish don't show symptoms ich is a very contageous fishy flu and you should treat the whole tank for 2-3 weeks even if you see no signs of disease in any of the fish
this is a VERY useful thread all about ich and the best ways to treat it please read the whole thing so you can be sure to cure your fish.

A few weeks ago, I was trying to guide a new member about how to set a bichir tank. It was one large thread. I encouraged to read and research and in one post I really screwed it and he came and corrected me. I felt so proud of him. Sadly, haven't seem him around since.
In short: do not generalize, and research by yourself.
