This isn't meant to be a slam on fish stores I was just wondering if this is something that other areas are experiencing.

Today I went on the hunt for some green tiger barbs to go into my 65 gallon tank. I went to 5 LFS/LCS and was surprised at the conditions of the tanks. I'm not one to knock stores for a dead fish here or there nor a store that has sick fish here or there.

What I found is that all five of these stores all in different areas, some chain, some mom and pop had really poor and sickly stock, beyond what I have ever seen or expected. The worst fish off were the Koi. All the koi in all five stores were sick with the same issues. Many were either dead of knocking on deaths door. Many of them were gasping, many of them had red skin lesions, and almost all them in all five stores has serious issue with their scaling. It was as if the scales were coming off. There were sticking up off the body. The other fish that were in extremely bad conditions were the gourami's. 4 of the 5 stores all had gourami's in bad conditions. Any gourami tank I came across had 5-8 dead fish in them, with the others not looking well.

The overall health of the stores stocks has me wondering if this is something that is happing with other stores. All the conditions of the fish were so similar especially with Koi which makes me wonder is there something up with the fish suppliers?

Is anyone else seeing this with their LFS/LCS?

Also just quick note for those who are into tiger barbs. PetSmart at least in my area has stopped selling greens.

Hm. Around here I can think of four fish/pet places. PetSmart (here at least) really does seem to be pretty decent. It's better than what I'd expect from a chain. That said, I don't expect much.

Of the three local fish/pet places... the one I use the most is right in the middle. They seem to care about their fish, and do pretty well with them both health and info-wise. The other two are on opposite ends of the spectrum... one is so bad I don't even want to go in there, and the other one is so good I'm totally and entirely intimidated, and I recognize the chances of me hitting their level of commitment and seriousness just isn't in the cards.

as for the koi, i've heard rumors that goldfish and koi are not very good quality during the warmer months. not only are the farms they come from much warmer, but the entire shipping process is more difficult because the trucks etc. are much hotter. i remember one time i was at a store when they were getting a fish shipment in, and at least three bags full of small goldies were dead and in brown water because they got too hot during shipping.

 Not sure of your location but quite often stores in certain regions use the same suppliers for their wholesale purchases. If these stores normally do a good job, give them a minute to recover. Talk to the managers. See if there has been a recent change in operations or buyers. Chk the next shipment or two for comparison. If the pattern dosen't improve, inform them of your observations of late & your intentions to take your business & all of your aquarist friends business elsewhere. Might make a difference, might not but at least you tried. "T"

We have these discussions all the time ;). They usually end up with people bashing big box stores and other people telling them that it really varies location to location, even if they start out by criticizing both mom and pop and big box.

There are some horrible fish stores, but I find it hard to believe that all of them are in that bad shape for no reason. Perhaps they were all ordered from the same supplier?

Where are you? im in long island new york and i have 2 really good indie stores and 2 chain petco sucks but its fish seem ok, pets warehouse always have tons of sick and dead fish.

Yeah I guess it probably is location and suppliers. I'm in the bay area and all 5 were having trouble. All of the stores are pretty good with taking care of the fish, some more than others. I think the 2 mom and pop shops and the 1 PetSmart surprised me the most because they usually have healthy fish. I really do hope it is a one time thing. Tony very good suggestion, I'll be sure to do that. Over here shipments come in on Fridays so I will wait for sometime next week and the week after and have a look around. Hopefully things will have improved.

Also, Wata very interest tidbit about the Koi. I had no idea, thanks for the info.

Thanks to everyone for weighing in on the issue.

Here (DE) the only 2 places that *I know of that seem to care for their fish is Petsmart in Dover and Seaford Pet Emporium. Walmart (both Milford and Seaford) don't do a very good job (big surprise) but I do have to say that Seaford seems to be cracking down recently. And the last time I was in The Fish Bowl (Dover), I was HORRIFIED by what I saw.

Same here (Spartanburg, SC area), also, at a small Mom and Pop lfs,
they said that they had stopped trying to stock the green barbs because
they could no longer keep them alive.
Suggesting that the green barbs have become like neon tetras in that they
are so inbred that they are no longer very hardy.

The regular striped barb and the gold/albino barbs are still available here.
