that's a bummer about the gouramis. It's good to pick out the ones you want from a tank, but sometimes the coices are tough when trying to get a pair because young fish can be pretty androgynous.
Take bolivian rams for example. they look exactly the same until they get to about 2-2.5 inches, when the males start getting the longer rays on the top and bottom of the caudal fins. VERY tough to be sure you have a male/female pair until you've had them several weeks.
