i have a 5 gallon aquarium with tetras and several plants. The plants are continously browning even though i add aquatic plant food. Is it because of insufficient lighting?
If you're dosing fertilizer, you need to be dosing CO2 and proper lighting as well. On a 5-gallon, you probably have an incandescent bulb in the hood. Go to Wal-Mart and pick up a 10 or 15 watt compact fluorescent bulb. Then look up DIY CO2 and set that up. Give it 48 hours, and you should be happy.
well what lighting do you have? you should have at least 15 watts to have plants living, and they say about 6500K. its hard to get that much over a 5 gallon so the best bet is to put a lamp over top and get a compact flouresent bulb with that kind of power, i am working on a planted 5 gallon and thats what i had to do because they dont make a stron enough bulb to work in the light fixtures unless you customize them. having 6500K with the bulb is a debatable subject though some say you need it that strong some say you just need high wattage. but give some more info on your current lighting
What type of plants are they?
What lighting do you have over your 5g?
10 watts of CF fluorescent would be fine for growing most of the low and even some medium light plants. A 15 watt bulb will put you closer to the high light category, where algae can become an issue unless you have C02 and fertilizers to help plant growth.
