Light hood fell in tank...

My tank is an Aqueon and the LFS around here doesn't sell that. They told me it was a Petco brand. I was clumsy with the CFL and broke it, to add to another nightmare situation, but luckily I cleaned it all up carefully because of the mercury.

I'm letting the hood dry out. I'll update you guys in a few days. I went ahead and bought a 20gal Aqueon setup (I'm bad, it's cuz they're so darn easy!) so maybe this is the incentive I needed to finally set it up :)

Thanks for the responses! Its an incandescent screw in that I put a CFL in. I'll let you know how it turns out :)

whats proper procedure if you see your light fall in right in front of you? unplug from the cord and remove? fish dont get electrocuted? any other electric dangers to consider?

Now I don't wanna sound all namby pamby or like yer Mum saying 'Johnny, don't run with those scissors', but this is a classic example of why the aquarium stuff should be plugged into a GFI outlet or strip. I'm recently back in the hobby after years of being out of it. It took me some time to get used to the idea of a submersible heater. The very idea of putting that heater and cord under water...oh my.
Oh yea....and unplug the toaster before putting the fork in there to get the stuck bread out!
ZZZZZZAP...POW...BANG! ;-)

Unplug at the outlet - do not touch the water!!!

how do i know if my powerstrip is a GFI?

what does GFI stand for?
Ground Fault Interrupter?

Yes, GFI stands for ground fault interrupter and GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter. Here is a write-up that explains GFI's really well.

I realize it's likely most folks in the hobby don't even think about where they plug lights and heaters and filters in, but like that commercial "water and electricity....not the best of friends" - and getting in the middle of their 'fist fight' can stop a heart in a second.

That's right.... 'the sky is falling'....'the sky is falling' - somebody has to say it ;-)

Footnotes:
1) I remember as a youngster I had a clip-on bed lamp. The bulb burned out so I removed it to get a replacement and forgot about it. I reached up in the dark fumbling around to turn it on and stuck my finger in the 'hot' socket. Now that's something you try not to do again!
2) For many years I worked in a manufacturing plant and was nearly electrocuted twice or lets say I received electrical shocks great enough to knock me down and make my teeth vibrate.
Electricity is like fire - use with extreme caution.
