Light upgrade and Aquaclear question

The lights look good, but how solid is this set up?
how are the lights held in place?
I would add a reflector of some type, also there is no cover?
Doesn't look safe?
His setup is fine. Looks like the one I have for my 28g, sits on the glass, modded the same way, I just chose not to use the metal mounts because they wouldn't fit right in mine. I mounted mine using nuts and bolts in the 28g, zip ties in the 55g. Here's the setup for my 55g, very worthwhile and solid mod. http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147012

BoredAgain,
Yours was the light mod that got me to get up and actually build mine. I couldn't see how you got enough clearance for the bulbs using zip ties to hold the sockets. The sockets I used originally have metal supports on both sides, I just removed one.

I started with the somewhat standard 22" hood we've all had at one time on our 20 and 55 gal tanks. The mounts pass through the hood and have a nut holding them from the othe side. Wiring is zip tied to itself and the short stiff wire from the switch hold it in place. Reused the power cable and power switch. Taped off the holes and painted 4-5 coats of white on the inside.

In the image, it's sitting on top of an All-Glass plastic hood. You're seeing the cutout from previous installations. I'm not quite sure I'm comfortable with how close the bulbs are to the top of the hood, but the temp from a digital guage left on top of the vents stays under 120 so I guess I'm ok with it.

I'm planning to build 3-4 more for my other 20s and my 55s. Some of the hoods I've got don't have vents already cut, I may have to build a jig so the grooves are somewhat even.

The heat shouldn't be an issue with that hood, the one on my 28g is exactly like that and those vents really help. Now my 55g hoods have no vents and they heat up quite a bit, which can make the bulbs fall apart...which has already happened to two bulbs. But the heat only seems to be an issue with the bulbs, nothing else. I'll be installing some fans here pretty soon, should take care of that.
