Can plants use 8,000 K lights? Basically I have a 5.5 gal tank and my light options are 9 watts of 6,700 K CF or 14 watts of 8,000 K T8. What would be better for the plants?
Thanks!
Monika

The simple answer is yes, the 8000K would work just fine...that is what I am using at the moment actually.

The issue is complicated by the fact that color temp of the bulbs in no way an indication of spectral output (wavelength)...it is more a measure of what the bulb looks like to the human eye. People are growing plants fine under 5000K up to 10000K bulbs.

i'd expand that range a bit, actually (further emphasizing the point). i've seen people using just below 5,000k up to 12,000k and reporting good success and par values considering.

that being said... and in total agreeance with pappy... i think personally that the cfl has better chances of fitting the bill on a 5.5 than the t8.

These are all 8000K:
