I've been told that the lights disturb fish in smaller tanks....Can anyone shed light on my ignorance. ;) The tank is a 5g Hex with 1 2-3" dollar fish.

No expert, but I know with my 10 gallon it wasn't the light per se, just that I left it on 24 hours a day when I didn't know any better. If you keep the lights on for 10 hours a day or so, and reliable leave them off the rest of the time, they'll get used to the cycle. This is assuming your tank isn't in the sunlight, which it shouldn't be anyway, especially with a tank that small. Better yet, use a timer. You can get 'em cheap at any home despot, blowes, or mall-wart.

Also, are you using wee incandescents? What sort of wattage are we talking about?

Only 15 watts and what hours would you say like 8a.m. to 6p.m.

Shouldn't flip them out. Just not 24 hours though.

Would hours would you recommend... with my 29g I just turn the light on when I get home from school 3:30p.m.ish and turn it off when I go to bed 11:30 ish and thats seems fine.

I run my lights from when i get home from school (3:00p.m) to when i go to sleep(12:00-2:00a.m) and the fish have done well with this.

i like to keep my ligts on for no more then 12 hours a day, 10 is the norm.

Well, it's not a common school of thought, but often you should do this nocturnally. set the alarm and wake up at around 3 or 4 to turn on, and then rush home from school to turn them off. Otherwise the fish will freak out.

Good luck Tran.!

it doesnt really matter what time..fish will adapt.
i keep mine from 3pm to 10pm. have it for awhile and now the rotalas starts to close up around 10pm, i guess plants knows the cycle too.
pretty intersting
