The reason they're still good at finding their way around is because, like most fish, they use the "lateral line system" for navigation. It's similar in function to echolocation used by bats. The lateral line is sensitive to pressure waves that are caused by the fish's movements and rebound off of solid objects. That's why tapping on aquarium glass is so stressful to fish. It would be like someone clashing cymbals in your ears.
