Hey Everybody, I just bought an Amazon Sword for my Goldfish Tank and realized after the fact that my light was not bright enough. I was wondering if it's possible to keep an amazon sword in a 29 gallon tank with a 20 watt plant bulb. I've been trying to find some 24 inch bulbs at 60 or 90 watts for my tank hood but I can't find them in Petsmart or online. All I can find in the 24 inch range maxes out at 20 watts. As of right now I do weekly water changes and fertilize it every time it gets changed. If anybody can give me any suggestions on any of this it would be appreciated. Thanks

I was in the same situation as you before. I purchased online a 30" Sattelite fixture online. It comes with a 50/50 bulb, so you'll need to buy a daylight PC bulb too with it. Overall I think it cost me $80 or so shipped. I love the looks and the performance of the Sattelite.

You might also look at the Coralife. I've heard good things about them too.

For about $65, you can get a 65 watt PC light shipped to your door. Even comes with the correct light unlike the Sattelite. 65 watts over 29 gallons in my experience is enough to grow about anything without light being a restriction. Might not be as great of growth as a 2 x 65 watt fixture, but hey, if it doesn't die I'm happy :D

If all you want is that amazon sword, then skip the "buy expensive lights" bit... It's one plant, that I've found to do relatively well in less than optimal light. If it starts yellowing out, start worrying. If you want a garden, then start reading, a lot, about what you'll need. If you try to approch the life of a single amazon sword like someone approaches aquatic gardening, then you'll farm algae, everywhere, including all over your amazon sword. It'll die, and it will have all been for nothing.

Yeah I kinda agree with the Goat... If the plant lasts a few months or so before fading away then IMHO I would just buy a new plant every so often, but it may even do ok as is. If you gear up everything for growing plants well, it will take some work and $ and for just a single plant or even a few plants probably wont be worth it and like Goatman said you'll probably end up with some serious algae probs.
