I'm starting a 10g freshwater planted tank. I'm going for low-tech, low-light plants.

I'm looking for a cheap & easy lighting setup. What would you recommend?

The more specific the better :) If it helps, I am ordering from Dr. F&S later today- so links to equipment would be welcome. :)

Thanks!

For a low-tech, low-light tank, and no CO2, I think 4wpg is a bit much. I'm using 1.5wpg and have the tank planted with Java Fern, Java Moss, Marimo Balls, and Green Temple. The plants seem to be doing fine.

I used a dual incandescent hood from walmart, and put in 2x23w spiral CF bulbs.

When I first set up my 10g, I just bought an incandescent hood and screwed in a couple of small CFLs. I think it worked out* to about 1.8 wpg, great for low-light plants. And it was pretty inexpensive, as I recall.

*(I've since switched to a fancier Coralife unit.)

I use the incandescent hood as well.

It cost about $10, and I get screw-in CFLs from the 99 cents store. Doesn't get much cheaper than that.

Great. I was kind of thinking along those lines (incandescent hood w/ CF lights)...but I am still a beginner w/ planted tanks so I wasn't too sure if that was the best way to go. Seems like its worked in the past, so I will go with that again!

Thanks so much guys. Very helpful!!!!!
