I am trying to figure out how to schedule my lighting....I leave for work at 7 am and like to see/feed my fish before I go; in the evening I like to watch/feed them as well. My tank is planted and I am thinking 12 hours a day is good.....any suggestions on how to set the timer? I was doing a split schedule but on the weekends I am not happy w/ it......If I left them on for 14 hours it would meet my personal needs but would that just promote algae? (it is a very low light system at the moment) 45 gallon tank w/ 40 watt full spectrum bulb...

Most people recommend having lights on for around 8 to 10 hours a day. I run mine from 7 to noon in the morning and then from 6 to 11 in the evening making for a total of 10 hours. That way I can view in the morning before work and then also in the evening after work. If you don't already have one, you can get a timer which allows for multiple on/off times.
You could always change to feeding once in the evening and having the lights on from say noon - 10.
For not too expensive(~$15) you can get a digital timer(not a coralife, but brinks) that has multiple on/offs and daily programming, so that you can do the split schedule during the week so you can see them in the morning and at night, and then you can see them all day long on the weekend, and still only do 10 hours of light per day.
She should be fine eating once a day. I have two angels just slightly larger than that and they have been fed once a day since I received them.
the timer I have now can be set for multiple times on/off but only for 24 hours/1 day; so weekends would have to be manually changed before and after....
I will look into other timers.....
