Delawhere?
Just curious what everyone else does with their lighting while on vacation. Should I get a timer for the 7-9 days? Keep lights on/off? Yes, few live plants in tank.

I set up my lights with a regular $5 wal-mart timer for when I went away. I liked it so much that I ended up leaving it in there. I was also able to set it up with a two hour siesta in the middle of the day to help cotrol algae, which seems to have helped a little. I noticed that some of my shyer fish seem to really enjoy siesta time, they come out to play. HTH, Michelle

Use a timer on shortened hours.

Timer for sure, vacation or not. I have my fish on a regular light cycle, which is easy for me, and I'm sure it is healthy for them. They are cheap and they just make sense.

I use a timer also..and I turn the heater down a degree or two to lower the respiration of the fish so that the water does not get as dirty....but then again, I tend to keep the tank a little on the warm side so I have a couple of degrees to play with.

we use timers.

except on the goldfish tank.. it's in a well lit part of the house (lots of windows) so they get the light cycle naturally.

Since there are live plants, I would buy a cheap timer and hook it up to your lights. In all other situations, using a timer wouldnt be necessary. A week long blackout cant possibly hurt your fish.

A timer it is--for the plants sake!
