Limestone as Liverock..

Found an article where a guy uses Limestone as an alternative to Live Rock..

What you think about it? he thinks its perfect.. just thought i'd get an idea, before i go out an buy anything..

seems like it would be a cheap alternative, but thats where im thinking there might be the problem.. get what you paid for?

I know you can get limestone chips and use it as a substrates, and it can also be used in hard freshwater set-ups, so the difference if it was a block or crushed i think would'nt make a ' difference '. But limestone also contains variable amounts of silica

coral is essentially calcium carbonate. limestone is essentially calcium carbonate. CaCO3 is CaCO3 is CaCO3. i'd say you can use limestone with no problems.

would probly only do 1/2 LF 1/2 lime stone or something (if i decide to go that way)

price difference might not make it worth bothering with.. will have a look around..

Hi limestone is a perfectly natural rock that consists of various seawater dwellers' shells, arogonite, dolomite etc.This rock is formed in shallowish water over millions of years. It would be a great source of calsium for any reef tank. personally i would use a ratio of 90/10 LF and LS repectively, but one or two pieces of LS should be good. I doubt that you'de find trace elements of copper and other metals in proper LS. Go for it.
