I have this plant growing like crazy.
Where the plant is growing out of the substrate (flourite),
it has grown the little thin hairy things. They are gathering a white fuzzy growth on them (probably algae). When I did my original planting, did I make a mistake with this plant by just taking it out of the pot that it came in and placing it in the substrate? Should I have split the plant into a few pieces and planted them separately? I feel like taking some cuttings from this and getting rid of the root ball in the substrate and replanting the cuttings. I would really appreciate some feedback!
Thanks.

It is a stem/bunch plant. You can certainly just cut the tops off and re-plant them, most do. You can also let it float...if you want to.

sounds like adventageous roots coming from the first node on the stem. the fuzz you are seeing is actually root hairs growing off of the roots, not algea. live roots secrete a substance that prevents other plants from growing within a certain area so i highly doubt youve got white algea. that would also mean the algea was non photosynthetic, it may however be a combination of roothairs, mucigel, and symbiotic fungus that is highly benificial to that plant. the majority of fungus in the ground grows in close proximity to the rhizome of plants.

cutting the rootball off of the plant does not seem like a good idea, this will definately shock the plant and cause it to focus on regrowing a root structure instead of leaf production. if you enjoy the fast growing nature of your plant do not do this. if the appearance bothers you, clip the highest roots off and cover as much as you can w/ gravel, or place a smaller plant in front to hide the roots from view.
