Of the same species? I'd go with no more than 4-5. They are territorial, and given lots of room, actually very active swimmers. Any fish smaller than them will be eaten--even other lions. Anything big enough to consider them food isn't a good choice--a large fish that isn't familiar with lions may try to eat one, and be killed.
What other fish are you planning to keep? thats some tank? shaol of cromis would make an attractive finger buffet for the lions

Wow Sharpie, you really bounce around on what you want. Didn't you start out wanting a 500g. I hope you have the experience and know-how to support that type of money hog. Otherwise that can turn into a nasty money pit.
