I have a 75gallon tank that has cycled it is filtering with a fluval 404 and a maxi jet 400 sending currnet across the bottom. I'm going to add a protien skimmer in the next couple of weeks. I've also got 45lbs of tufa being seeded by a couple of pounds of live rock.

I read an article here say I could keep to volitan lionfish in this tank comfortably.

now for the questions.

1.can I house the two lions?
2.can I keep anything else with them in this system?
3.how should I set up the rock to make them the happiest?
4.I'd like to add a sump would this help and does anyone have a simple sump design?
5.how noisy are sumps this tank is in my libary?

1. yes, they can even be comfortable in a 40 gallon (You WILL want to add the protein skimmer)
2. yes, but nothing that will pick at it, and nothing it can eat
3. doesn't really matter, they willbe comfortable anyways... they just like to hang out and take it easy. Just make sure that they have open spaces to sit and relax ^___^
4. well, if you would like to add a sump and you don't have overflows built-in, there is a company that makes a hang-off-the-back overflow/return system... check your LFS, I think its a CPR. As for the sump itself, if you are just housing a protein skimmer, you can use a simple acrylic or glass fishtank big enough to keep it in. Heck, you could stop by Wal-Mart and pick one up for cheap, lol.
5. depends on the setup. If you have a big return pump, it can get noisy. Built-in overflows can also be noisy with the constant splashing of water down the column.

Good luck, hope that helped! :D

Lionfishes are really mellow and just like to relax because they thier spines tend to keep preditors away, so they really dont fear much. However they will eat anything that can fit in thier mouth, and they have BIG mouths, thier about 3/4 the size of is body.

Yeah, they're mellow until they're cornered! They get SCARY then 0_o

But yeah... depending on the size, their mouths are pretty big. Anglerfish, now THERE'S a big mouth, lol.

Welcome to Aquaria Central! IMHO, a 75 is too small for a full grown adult Volitan. Have any of you guys seen an adult Volitan? I have and they are HUGE! Volitans grow to the size of a basketball. So picture a basketball with fins floating in your tank. I think a 125g is minimum for them. You could keep a Volitan in a 75 for some of its life however. The only lions I would keep in a 40 are the Fu Manchu (which I have 2 of in a 55) and the Dwarf Fuzzy. The Dwarf (Zebra) Lion could use the 75g too. Symon1, have you looked into the (IMO) much more beautiful Radiata Lion or Antennata Lion or Fu Manchu or Dwarf or Dwarf Fuzzy Lions? Any of those would fit comfortably in a 75g. They can have tankmates just no small narrow fish like Gobies, Blennies, etc. And no fin nippers like Triggers, Puffers, Butterflies and sometimes even Tangs and Angels. I have a 55g with the center peice fish being the 2 Fu Manchu Lions, then there are also 2 small 1" Niger Triggers (they are going to my 209g when they gain some size), 1 Nemo (Occ. Clown), and 4 Mono Sebaes.
3. Depending on what lion you get depends on what way to set up the tank. The Radiata, Fu Manchu, Dwarf, Dwarf Fuzzy are all pretty shy when introduced so they should have lots of rock in their tank. The Volitan, Russels (is a Volitan without black in the fins), and Antennata are pretty outgoing so they should have some swimming space. I have a sump with mine and I love sumps. I also use predominantly live sand and live rock with the addition of a protein skimmer. Anyway, hope this helps and good luck. And once again Welcome to Aquaria Central!

Yeah, they do get pretty dang big. I had to freeze a nearly full-grown one at work 'cause it was going to die... a service customer brought it in...

How big is big

Hi i have a lion and ive heard everything fron 12 inches to 18 inches for a fully grown fish can anyone tell me if this is body size or finnage size and at what age do they reach full size roughly? Ive read the books ect but they all say different

tamed lions

its true that lions get big but anyone who keeps volitans will tell you they are docile and lazy. Which is why they are fine to house in a smaller tank than most fish thierr size. If you look into it nearly everywhere on the web will list 40-50 gallons as an acceptable size for even an adult volitan. I have a 9 incher in my 55 and he loves it. They do not pace the tank like a lot of fish do. He preferrs to sit around and watch whats going on outside the tank, then maybe take a saunter to the other side of the tank .... if he feels like it. haha.

I have mine with a butterfly and a rabbit fish. Though he has lived with other temporary residents. He has never bothered any fish or inverts except feeders and krill. He will be great friends with anything that won't fit in his mouth :D . More than one can be kept in a 75g. 3 might be pushing it. Hope this helps!

I prefer to keep lions in larger tanks simply because they are a HUGE waste producer, and the bigger tank reduces the odds of it causing a problem.

I agree with Orion. Plus whenever you see the 40-55g that is the MINIMUM tank size they can be kept in, not the ideal size. I personally will never kept a semi-adult to adult Volitan Lion in anything less than a 125g. V. lions get to 15" and are like a basketball with fins floating in a tank. So look at a basketball, add fins and that is how large they get.
