List of my newbie planted tank questions

What exactly is a nerite? Lol

Where do I get potassium permanganate?

Nerites are a snail that can not bread in fresh water. They do a really good job of converting excess food and algae into plant fertilizers.

Potassuim permangananate is used in pools so locally I find it at my pool supply store.

Why would you want to put dirty water into a fresh setup. I think most of the stress would come from the netting and bucket routine not from the new water.IMO

'Dirt' is good.
'Dirt' contains all those tiny creatures, plants and fungi that are part of the equilibrium in an aquarium, and help keep it balanced. They will turn up eventually, so you might as well have them from the start. It's when you have an imbalance in the aquarium that you are most likely to have problems, IMO

But dirty water is different. At most it'll contain nitrates for plants, but it won't help the cycle or ease stress on fish.

ok so new question.

With DIY co2 would I need more than one 2 liter bottle?
Whats the purpose of more than one bottle?

I'm assuming you use more than one bottle even out the flow so when you make a new bottle you never really lose co2.

Very little beneficial bacteria floats around in the water. So using tank water doesn't help. Doing that just brings in more dirt and nutrients you don't want, anyway.

Those were great questions, Kuthoht.
