:D Just wanted to share something with you all. I have a part-time job at Petco on the weekends. This past Sunday a lady came in looking for a hood for a 90 gallon tank. She told me that she was given the tank by her brother in law because she had 2 pacus and 2 albino catfish that out grew her 55 gallon tank. I sold her the lid and then asked what she was going to do with the 55 gallon tank. She said she was going to sell it and asked if I was interested. Of course I said yes and we set something up so that I could go and take a look at it. The tank was in great shape and we agreed that I would buy it for $60.00. It includes a deluxe hood and the tank. This worked out great for me because mu biggest tank that I have right now is 30 gallons. I'm so excited about the possiblities with this tank. :idea2: Well, now for the advice that I need from you guys. The tank has some hard water stains on the inside and the hood has some white stains from the water. I want to make this tank look like brand new. How do I get the hard water stains off the glass and what would I use to make the hood look like new. I'd also appreciate some ideas for the tank. Just to let you know that the hood had the slots for the filter pushed out because the y were running two Aquaclear filters. I on the other hand am going to run two Emperor 400 filters. I know it's over kill but more in my option is always better. Please give me some ideas for the tank set-up. Thanks everyone ;)

you can use razors to scrape the glass and a vinegar/water solution for the other areas. I know OG likes to use Oxy-clean on a lot of her Aquarium thing and she's been quite successful with it.

I'm not sure what kind of advice your looking for...
what kind of fish?
what kind of decoration?
what type of heater?
Those things are fairly personal...if you want to be inspired perhaps you should spend some time looking at pics of tanks on here to get an idea of what you'd like to achieve. Then we could advise you on how to accomplish it.

DD covered how to clean the glass.

Nice buy on the tank! I work parttime at petco too!!! WOOT! anyhow, I'd aim for a nice comunity setup on this tank... I have a large catfish in mine, and it sux, because there isn't anything sold anyware around here that he won't eat!!!! I do like having him, but I really wish that I could actualy see some fish swimming around in there, the catfish hides under his rock all day, so I'm just staring at an empty tank... *sigh* anyways, what kind of filter are you looking at getting if you dont have one already?

what advice do you want?
this is a pretty big site but youve only waited 6 hours for a reply. give people time to come home from work, school or whereever they would be today.

I just went through this in October. I relocated my 55 from up in my loft to down stairs. Even though I always thought it looked good, it DID have alot of hard water on the glass and buildup on the hood.

I razor bladed the inside glass walls of the tank. Stay away from the corners. The outside plastic I cleaned with the vinegar & water mix. Then I rinsed like crazy with the garden hose.

The hoods were a mess. They had some built up scale on them. Those got 100% vinegar, mopped on and brush scrubbed until it all came off.

Now it looks good again.

If you get a tank of rift lake cichlids, post pics so I can live vicariously through your tank. Dark cichlid substrate from eco-complete... potted plants, some stonework... That'd be my choice if I got a 55 for a steal.
