Hi everybody.....I saw something in my tank yesterday that I'm concerned about. I was looking at my tank yesterday, and saw this little worm looking thing on my "live rock" . We have had the tank set up about 3 months now, and when we bought the live rock it was plain white and we didnt see any "life" from it, never have. We also have crushed coral, I know thats bad now, but the LFS told us we "needed" it, but we plan on switching to sand soon. The only thing we have in our tank is 5 hermit crabs and 1 green chromis. I feed the fish flake food and some times blood worms and the day before yesterday I fed it freeze dried tubifex worms. I saw 1 "worm" on the rock and then I noticed THOUSANDS on the CC. I'm not sure if they are even worms. They are about 1/4 inch long and black, look like small black thin hairs. They look like they move, but I'm not sure if that is just the water movement. Could it have been from the tubifex worms? I've never fed the SW fish those, I had them for our FW fish but it said on the container for marine fish too, so I decided to try it. Could this be something harmful to my fish? And I don't think they came from the rock, the CC is covered in them, and like I said, I never saw anything from this rock in the 3 months we've had it. I cant take a pic of them because I don't have a camera yet that works, my other one doesnt take good pictures in the house and there is no way it would pick up those tiny worm things. I did a water change about 4 days ago, and they wont there then, so this has really got me puzzled.

if you really bought live rock there should have been life on it by now. that sounds shady to me. My live rock wasn't white at all and had life on it within a week and a month later its teeming with new life everyday.

but aside from that.. I dont know what the worms could be other then bristol worms perhaps. look up bristol worms online... does it look like them?anyone have an idea?

Maybe notworms at all. Maybe poop? If you siphon some out and put them on a white plate do they move and what do they look like? try this and take a pic and post it.

Thanks for the replies....they must really be worms because they are now crawling halfway up the tank glass. As for the rock, it was just plain white rock, but we have seen nothing at all coming from the rock in three months. I think we were sold base rock as live rock because he knew we were new to the saltwater hobby. So I think we got jipped in that area. I was actually thinking when I saw the first worm that it was something finally coming from the rock, but then I noticed the worms all over the CC, and it's like they appeared over night. I have seen and read about bristle (sp?) worms before, I dont think its those. These are so tiny, probably not even a 1/4 of an inch long, and thinner than one hair strand! Really wierd. I'll keep searching the web, and if I find out anything I'll run it by y'all. I would post a pic but my camera is not working at the time, been meaning to buy a new one for a while, wish I had now. Would y'all recommend changing to sand now from the CC because of the worms? I just hope they are not something bad. Thanks for all the help, it's greatly appreciated!

as your tank is new, i would personaly switch the sand over now to aragonite sugar grade reef sand if its financially viable to you...It "can"cause nitrate issues when live starts to develop in the tank..

just an opinion of course
