i figured it was only a matter of time before it somehow got into my little tank.

Seeing as though i caught it early and there isnt much im going to try the 0 light for 3 days trick.. at early stages this works.

if it doesnt work out and it gets into full bloom then i might say good bye to this hobby :/

Somehow I am suspecting it is because you did something in both tanks, like used the same tool (turkey baster), net, etc or put your hand in the tank and then the other tank and it spread that way. Dino doesn't just magically jump from tank to tank.... either does hair algae (which I spread from one tank to another by doing something similar)

This time.. after 3 days if it doesn't help, go drastic fast. Take out all the corals into a rubbermaid tub, I would do a revive dip on them at that time as a "just in case" measure since they are out, and just go super crazy cleaning out the tank, equipment, rocks. Wipe down things like heaters with a paper towel soaked in vinegar, run powerheads in a bucket with water/vinegar mix, toss out the sand and replace, and if you want to save your rocks, setup several buckets with saltwater and take out a rock at a time and as long and violently as you can shake the rock in each of the buckets to get it cleaner in each one... it sounds like a major pain, but luckly 14g isn't that big and if you start early you can be completely done within a very long day.

Yea if it doesnt go away in that time period luckily i have a friend in buffalo now who has a very nice tank who i think would tank the corals off me until i get it fixed.. i would get new sand and rock and clean the crap out of it. this little tanks my pride and joy and im not losing it to this **** too.

heres hoping i wont even have to go extreme :(

this blows :(

Welcome to my world... my tank is still not doing well at all. This last week I have been having extremely bad diatom blooms on my sand all of the sudden.. also cyano and hair algae just will not go away completely. At least now that all my corals are dead I have nothing decaying in the tank any longer.. now I am just patiently waiting for everything to mellow out... it is like my tank is just now acting like it is at week 4 of a new tank cycle... so once all the diatom blooms finish, hair algae finally dies off, and the cyano goes away I will let some coralline algae take over the rocks for a little while and then think about restocking the corals.. still looking at several more months before I get to that point.. I really need to not run my MH light right now, just wasting power, which comes out to about $80 a month to run both my tanks.

it certainly is a risky and nerve testing hobby man.. i feel ya

Holy smokes...what happened to you!?:omg:

I always considered you someone who knew a lot about tanks....and would never have big problems. I am completely surprised you had something go this bad.

Scary...you think you got things in control and bamn..curve ball and things go bad..... makes me want to do a water change just hearing this =p

I have not had any diatoms as of yet...so I only scratched the surface on learning about it as I dug about cyano back in the day.

Silicates is what causes those correct? So how exactly did you get enough of that in there? Any advise for me to keep my eye on so I don't get that problem to?

I diligently watch for cyano and algae.....soon as I see a odd increase in growth....of any (even tiny tiny bubbles on rocks) .....I immediately go out and buy water and change out 5 gallons on the spot. then do my normal 10g on my Saturday Schedule.

but silicates.. I read if you have none..diatoms wont form..but how does one add silicate unknowingly? ( i also ask since new marine people may want to know to)

I simply had bad thing after bad thing happen all in a row.. like 20+ different bad things all happening one after another, some my fault, some out of my control, but the end result is I no longer have SPS corals. One or two bad things, you can recover.. but when the stars align just right there is no fighting it. I tried to fight it the first couple months and just ended up making things worse in the process. Live and learn.. I know exactly what went wrong though and like I said, some of the things that were out of my control I couldn't help, and those were the things that started my tanks demise.. my reaction to the problems though made sure I would kill the corals (like using Chemi-Clean on my tank was the last straw that killed off the remaining montipora corals I had).

wasnt really his fault lol its its his water companies

ex-landlord putting in wall paper glue into the tank was the start of the problems.. then moving the tank to a new location certainly didn't help.. and bad water really put the tank into a dive.
