I was wandering if anyone had any information on the cultivating of red worms or Grindal worms as a source of live food? What are the pros and cons of using live worms that you have raised at home besides the obvious high fat content. What possible diseases do Red worms carry?
I have a friend who is feeding his Angels red worms that he is raising in a med size plastic bin.

Funny thing is there is no odor associated with the worm culture, he is using organic material as bedding and rinsing well before feeding.

My concern with this is the possible introduction of a foreign parasitic organisms that may be harmful to my Angels. Raising these worms looks rather simple and if the risk is low it would be a fairly inexpensive food source .

Any in site would be appreciated.

I also raise dart frogs, so I have plenty of fuit flies left over to feed my fish. That way they get even more variety in their diet.
 
I just started a culture of redworms (bought a batch from kazarie.com) and they are very, very simple to keep. There is a risk of parasite infection as with any food, you just need to get them from a reputable source. I was referred to kazarie by multiple people who have been using them for years, so I went with it.

Another plus to feeding these worms is that it is much less messy than using flakes, pellets or frozen foods. If the fish don't eat them right away, the worms live for a while, giving the fish a chance to come back and eat them later.

My friend also ordered his worms from Kazarie, I believe we are going to give it a try.
Fruit flies are also something to consider as I'm told they are very easy to culture.
The hole reason behind the idea of raising our own live food is quality control and the unknown handling of frozen product currently offered at our LFS.
Any tips or advise on starting a worm culture?

Only advice is to make sure you bury their food and screen the air holes to keep insects out. I started out with two pounds and my discus love them. However, I have seen a few more insects in the house since I added the culture. It may be going outside soon.
