45 lbs. of Dr's Foster and Smith's hand pick premium whatever stuff. This is my first draft, and I'm sure things will change over time. I know you can see equipment on the right, but I want to start with function over form until I gain experience. There were some remnants of sponge here and there, and what looks to be coral on the lower right rocks.

Click the pic for a full-res version if you want to see things up close.

I can't hear this enough!!! Looks good! And dang nice photography! I can tell now you will bwe succesfull with this tank. Please keep us informed!

Wont be long and you can add a cleanup crew to keep this looking as it does now! How long has this been set up? And what are current levels water wise? Rest of equipment?

Good luck!

Should a cleanup crew be the first thing to add, or should they be added later? Sand and salt have been in the tank for a few days, it was run with water and nothing else for a few days prior. As for water parameters, SG is 1.022, ammonia is about 2.4 mg/L (plenty to get things started), temp is 80.1 . Haven't tested pH or anything else.

BTW, I haven't been running the skimmer since adding the rock. I figured I want all of that stuff floating around the tank until the cycle is completed. Is this a worthwhile approach?

Equipment is listed in the link in my sig. What you see is what you get, really.

As for the pics, I redid them to more accurately reflect what things look like. I got pretty close. Reality is that the tank displays a slightly greener tint than depicted. Strange.

live rock

DId the rock arive in good shape? DId you have to clean it, brush it,etc., or was it clean enough to put in tank as is? Odors?

Being new to SW, I'm not much of a judge. I had requested and paid for Saturday delivery because I didn't want the box to sit on my doorstep in the cold (relative term here in California), but it showed up on my doorstep on Friday. I suppose if it was between it sitting on my doorstep on Friday, versus sitting in the FEDEX facility in the cold, then arriving on Saturday....Friday was acceptable. I noticed the bottom of the box seemed a little wet. Turns out that they were rough with the box and the styrofoam box inside was broken. The whole bottom broke out so when I went to lift it out, the bottom of the styrofoam box and the rocks stayed. The rocks were in an unsealed plastic bag with perhaps 1 page worth of newspaper. Did they intend on keeping things moist that way? I hope not. I didn't have to brush them...what you see is the way I pulled them out of the box. No odors, no little critters either...I'm a little disppointed about that.

I'm not sure how hardy live rock is or if major damage was done, but I've got it now so here I am.

I just got the exact same amount of the same rock from them. Actually I could say ditto to your post and avoid typing. I picked up the styrofoam container and the bottom and the rock stayed in the bottom of the cardboard box as well as there being like 1 piece of wetted paper in there. Although I am not completely happy with the coverage of corraline algae, there is pretty good coverage of light green corraline and I haven't had much if any die-off and really no noticeable spike in my tank. I am getting some of that garf grunge to give my tank a kick start as well as a crew of snails and hermits which they are selling at garfDOTorg for a buck a piece. I didn't get the 40 lb bag of livesand to start mine, just a 20lb and a couple of bags of dead stuff. I have never bought liverock mailorder before, so I think my standards were a little high. I used to live in denver, so I could go from store to store and pick the best stuff I tore down my tank for the move and now I live in Roswell , Nm :joe: where not only is our 1 saltwater fish store really small, but they want 8 bucks a pound for rock that doesn't look near as good as the stuff I got from fosters.

FOSTERS RULES LOLOLOLOL :dive2:

Ammonia down to about 1.5 mg/L, nitrites are off the chart...somewhere near 4-4.5 mg/L. Those little buggers are working hard. On a side note, most of the colored algae seems to be gone. I guess I'm getting lots of die-back. The skimmer is pulling some foul smelling yellow liquid out. I guess that's a sign of something. I'll leave it to you folks to tell me what that is :)
