live rock turning....brown?

i think before we start getting gittery about the type of sand, lets see what it is first?..

Did you buy the sand yourself? If so, do you remember the maker of the sand? or where you brought it from so we can look to see if this type of sand is a potential problem..

Niko

I bought it from Big Al's, can't remember the manufacturer, just remember that it was labeled "marine sand" and its really fine.

what's your calcium reading man? Coralines don't do well if there isn't enough available calcium in the water for them to use for growth. How old is your tank if it's fairly new I'd assume that you have more than an average amount of free silica in your bottom as aquarium gravel is pretty much dyed glass. If you plan to reef I'd get rid of it and replace it with sugar grained sand otherwise you'll have huge nitrate issues.'

bought a calcium test, and currently im at 420 ppm

guess i need to go buy a phosphate kit now??

Odd, I've only ever seen the typical aragonites in the white and pinkish tones, and the tahitian moon sand which is black. I don't see a blue variety on BigAls at the moment.

the only thing i remember was that it said 'marine sand', had a picture of a clownfish on it, and cost 4-5 bucks a bag, 5 lb bags i believe

Sorry, I shouldn't have assumed I just looked at and though hmm blue aquarium gravel there's the problem. I would also worry if it were dyed blue marine sand as the arogonite tends to go into solution slowly and well if it's substrate goes into solution so does the dye.

I KNOW im not crazy...i'm going to make a special trip to big als tomorrow just to take a picture of this sand and ill post it

keep an eye out for it ;-)

On the same topic, I have had my 75 up and going for 3 weeks. it had run of the mill bulbs since I had ordered a nice metal halide/ PC setup. I came home today to find some crazy diatom bloom.
all params for above tests are at 0,
Nitrates are around 15 (between colors)
temp is at 78,
SG is at 1.023
pH is between 8.2 and 8.4 (test is stupid, I can barely tell the difference, going to get another one)

Flow isn't great, but have a koralia 3 on its way to add to the existing powerheads which I'm not sure what they are moving.

Nothing has changed except the massive upgrade in light, so is it safe to assume that caused the outbreak?

Oh, and I am using RO/DI water with reef crystals since I'm planning on getting some inverts in there at some point.
