Live rock upside down?

I thought that I read somewhere that there was a top and bottom of live rock. When I picked some up today at the LFS the girl put it in the bag and I did not pay attention to which side was up. I got home and took a look at it and found half to be smooth and half to be rough. I am wasting my time or is there something i need to be looking for.

If there is coralline, coral, or other growth, then that side goes up. Otherwise, I don't imagine it makes a lot of difference.

most likely the rough side would go up, thats where you'll see most of the cure

do you guys use egg crates for the bottom of you tank? I'm a little worried about put in a hundred pounds of rocks.

I guess anything can be helpful if it makes you feel better. My tank is small and only has a bit of rock in it so I am not concerned. Check the type of aquarium and the strength of the glass ect.

The bottom can handle the weight. Eggcrate will just trap debris and make your life difficult down the road.

1 gallon of water = 8 lbs., so i dont think the rock will be a worry

I don't mean the weight. I'm referring to the pointed edges of the rocks.
