Just a quick question here. I was curious to know if base rock is considered to be live rock and if so why?

Thank ya

no, live rock is live rock- because it has benificial bacteria- it stayins in water.
base rock is dead- it has no life on it, it doesnt need to be in the water so its cheaper to get bc there is no life on it. if you combine live and base rock in you tank your base rock will eventually become live bc your live rock life will spread to it.

I thought that the live rock would eventually spread because after about a month or so, all of my base rock began growing all kinds of colorfull algae on it. Anyways thanks for the quick reply and informative answer.

yes the live rock will spread onto your base rock and that will become live rock but when you first put it in your tank it is just dead base rock

Base rock: Dead rock from the ocean

Live rock: Rock from the ocean that has algae growing on it, hosts inverts, etc.

However, when put base rock is put in a tank with live rock, it will start to grow algae too.

Now that we know the difference between "live rock" and "dead rock", could you explain the difference between "live cured rock" and "live uncured rock"? What about "precured rock"?

Uncured live rock has is live rock that was collected in the ocean, and then shipped in damp paper (or similar) to your LFS, during wich time a lot of the life on the rock will die off. Whe it gets into your tank, all the dead stuff will rott in your tank, causing an amonia spike wich causes more life on the rock (and any fish/inverts you introduced previously) to die off - the procces continues itself until bacteria grow and take care of the amonia, by turning i tinto nitrite, then a second type of bacteria develops and turns nitrite into nitrate.

For cured live rock, the procces has already been done, although this rock won't be completely cured when you get it unless the curing procces happens locally (becuase the rock still gets shipped in wet paper where it will dry out a bit and stuff will die off). I'm pretty sure precured live rock is the same thing.
