loaches for a 38 gallon tall?

I have a 37 G tall and I have one seargent major loach and one yo-yo loach. They do a fairly good job at being a clean up crew. Plus they are entertaining when they have the occasional tussle with each other. They don't get very big either.

What do you mean clean up crew? They don't get very big? Botia rostrata can get up to 8 inches!

Probably the way loaches try to eat up everything they see like most loaches I kept.

My yoyo is 5 inches and that is already a big size even for a 38 gallons tank especially when you must give the loaches consideration to be kept in groups, not singly.

Mine are only 3-4 inches. I read about them in one of my aquarium BI have had them for almost 7 months now. I did just look the seargent major loach H3D and you are right that they do get about 8 inches. When I got it, I was in the hobby for like one month. I just went to the LFS told them my set up and said I needed something to clean up the bottom of my tank. They sold me the SM loach. I have had it for over 7 months now so I don't know if it will get bigger or not. Sorry about the misleading advice :( .

And by clean up crew I meant that they eat the left overs of flake food that sink to the tank floor. (I also supplement them with sinking bottom feeder pellets and algae wafers everyday). I am not that bad of a fishy owner.

Don't be sorry about it. All of us do commit mistakes and all of us have gone to the wrong directions before.:) We know you meant well to help others.:)

I have a lot of loaches in a 37G tall. I have been fortunate in that I have not had a problem with my skunks. I find the YoYos to be the best value. The Kubotais go for over $20 each here in metro Atlanta, but the YoYos are about $5 each. The YoYos are very active and they are not as shy as clowns and some others. You could also add 5 or so kuhlis - they don't add much to your bioload but they're pretty cool when you have enough of them for them to feel comfortable to come out and play.

Thanks to everybody for the advise. I really like the dwarf loaches and they are supposed to only get a couple inches long. I think they are kind of rare. I have only been able to find them for about $20 ea online. I guess maybe I should really look at cory's. Someday I will have more loaches though. I am concerned about having an appropriate home for them, though. That is why I found a new home for my clowns, and don't think think I will ever really have a home big enough for them but it sounds like there are are lots of other possibilities.....

You could fill in your location in your profile someone might now a lfs around you that sells the dwarfs. They sell them here around Columbus if you happen to be in Ohio (well technically they are hit or miss). I'd opt for Zebras before Yoyos or Kubotais. Yeah, your tank is a bit small but Zebras will typically be smaller than the other two.

I live near Kansas City. If anyone has would know where they might sell any of the above, but especially the dwarf loaches, I would appreciate.

The other thing would be to post over on loaches.com or if you want I could post a question there to see if anyone knows. I'd think with a big enough town like KC there should be some means of getting those fish, sometimes at a good lfs they will order in fish for you too, you just might have to speak with the manager.

I'm from KC, too. Lawrence KS has PetWorld - a wonderful petstore. I was there about a month ago, didn't see dwarf chain loaches then, but it's worth a call if you're on the western side of the city. If you're on the eastern side, Brother's Pets is about the best around. Try calling them.

I have never seen these loaches locally, ever, if 30 years of fishkeeping. You could try posting on the KC aquarium clubs board - that would increase your chance finding someone who knows a nearby LFS with them: http://kcfishclub.informe.com/index.php
