Ok update.... I found a new home for the gourami and I am now the proud new mommy of two baby jack d. s and a green terror baby lol they are soooo cute and my gourami is living with a fish specialist who better to give her the care she needs! YEAH!!! :thm:

generally, most cichlids are incompatible with gourami. here are some 'smaller' cichlid species which can be maintained in a 55 gallon tank, given appropriate conditions. how they would fare with gourami i cannot say.

yeah theres something about gourami's that cichlids dont like, it could be they find them similiar looking, but even an angel fish will attack a gourami.
i thought of rams but then i wondered if the rams would be bullied by the gourami...
firemouths may work for a short time but once the firemouth gets bigger it may harrass it.
i have a 2" albino oscar growing out with a opeline gourami that used to beat everyone up in the tank, the gourami is like 4" and the baby oscar whips his butt, the baby oscar doesnt bother anyone else just him, so it could be the similiar appearance
