8'2" long
244.5 lbs
44.75" girth
This was killed on Lake Sam Rayburn, Texas.

It is too bad that they killed the fish. I'm a huge fisherman and even I wouldn't kill a fish that large. The facts are...

1. The meat on a fish that old and big won't taste good.

2. That fish has obviously has supreme genetics and should be left to breed.

3. Bow hunting fish is kinda lame (shooting fish in a barrel).

4. A fish of that type and size probably wasn't and can't swim to fast. (see number 3).

5. A gar that size has to be extreamly old, hasn't he/she earned the right to live their life out "in" the water?

Just my opionion, but pictures would have been enough I think.

those are good pics and a very good cach, but its not a monster among alligator gars . Alligator gars grow to 10 feet, people who know anything Aabout gars know at least that.

i wouldnt want to get on the wrong end of that fish! it could easily eat someone if it was hungry!!! just as big as a shark

hunting of any kind (unless out of necessity for food) is in my opinion cruel. Wanna make it a sport..then take it down without weapons. If some guy can jump a deer and bring it down with his bare hands, then all the power to him but otherwise, leave it alone. They already have nothing left on this earth in terms of land. Animals deserve some respect in my opinion.

I fish and i release, i guess you can say its for sport but i only release the small ones or the fish i'm not looking for. If i catch a nice largemouth bass i eat it.

Fishing for sport disgusts me. It has to be one of the cruelest forms of animal torture humans can legally partake in.

So the question begs.. why post that in an Aquarium forum?

Calm down, whenever I fish I almost always catch and release. And I don't agree with the killing of this fish, but I posted this because I thought that this was an excellent example of an alligator gar.

Yes, I know that alligator gar's can grow to ten feet long, but I haven't heard of a gar that size being caught in a while. And, the only picture that I've seen of a ten foot gar is this one, which is obviously not recent.

If you have any more recent pics of 10 ft.+ gar, post them because I'd love to see them.

I'm a big fisherman, yet I don't eat a bit of any kind of fish, nothing at all.

I'm a big supported of catch-and-release. I do it for the fun of catching the bass, then let them back out into the water to grow like the big boys =p

I never leave hooks in the mouth or throat (Atlhough, if your not good with certain tools to remove the hook from the throat of the fish, then it is 100x better to leave it in for it to rot away in a few weeks. It may dampen the fishs ability to eat, but in most cases the hook rusts in short time and falls out. Trying to remove it without the knowledge or tools will usually kill the fish soon, which I highly frown upon)
